Germany Blog: Darmstadt, Luisenplatz

Bus, tram, and shopping plaza, all cobblestone. Beautiful!

Germany Blog: Frankfurt Hostel

This Hostel, Haus der Jugend, is clean and comfortable (just not quiet - but what hostel is?).

Here Denis is taking a break and organizing before another three or four hour blitz of photography.

Germany Blog: Darmstadt, Waldspirale

A building with interesting architecture. I like the shape and coloring, except for the golden domes on top. Very cool building. Try getting that type of building past a San Diego planning group!

You can see the Hochzeitsturm (wedding tower) and Russkapella (Russian Chapel)

Germany Blog: End of Day 1

Wow it was a difficult day today. I barely slept on the airplane and I arrived at 5:00 so I basically had to stay up for over 34 hours or so until I could sleep. That was very hard to do.

Frankfurt is beautiful. It has all of the old churches and castles and bridges, but you add in some modern architecture and you've got a typical German city.

Ok. Once all of the people in my room here get settled, I'm going to try to get some sleep tonight. I have earplugs and I think I'll need them. There are some younger people in the hallways slamming doors and screaming. Maybe I'm getting too old for hostels, or maybe I need to have my own space that's not invaded by teenagers.

Germany Blog: Frankfurt Altstadt

Most Altstadts look the same, but they're all a bit mesmirizing.

Germany Blog: Main River

There are two Frankfurts in Germany and this one is on the Main River, as seen in this photo of the Stadtcentrum

Germany Blog: Air Stairs

We are deboarding our plane right now in Frankfurt at a remote stand and we need to take a bus to the terminal. I thought Germany was civilized!

Great flight and very smooth. We actually had to wait to take off from Philadelphia because we would have arrived too early, due to positive tailwinds, breaking Frankfurt's curfew. The flight was only maybe 1/3-2/3 full so we could spread out.

Germany Blog: Flight 700

Here's my 330-300 that I'll be taking to Frankfurt from Philadelphia. It's on time so far. The mechanics just replaced one of the front tires. That's amazing that they can do that without jacking the plane up in a hangar!

Germany Blog: US Airways A320

This plane, operated by America West, will get me to Philadelphia. We left out of gate 20 which is weird because it's all by itself in a little alcove and then you walk down a loooooong hallway to get to the plane.

I'm leaving on a jet plane don't know when I'll be back again.

It's almost as if US Airways is having as much fun as Southwest Airlines!

Germany Blog: Smoky San Diego

It's funny/coincidental that I'm going to take off into smoke on this trip like the smoke that I landed in almost four years ago when I flew in for my interview.

US Airways A321

This is one of the four different types of planes I'll be flying on my trip to Germany!

Route 992

I may be taking one of these buses to the San Diego airport for my trip to Germany! These are brand new El Dorado EZ Riders that replaced awful El Dorado Transmarks. Replacing bad quality buses with even worse quality buses is bad.

Blogging Germany

Hi everyone! I'm going to publish to this blog as I travel around Germany. This way, I will be able to remember where I went without having to remember when I return (that happens to me all the time). Feel free to post comments and questions...I'll be using the power of Blackberry to publish!

Remember that you'll also see collateral posts which you might not think are related to Germany such as:
  • airplanes
  • airports
  • trains/trams
  • buses
Feel free to skip these posts!
